A Little Bit of Me

Classic Bangalore accident – a blame game

It was a regular Thursday summer morning : I was on my way to my dance class, while listening to music and reading my book (The Confession). Just as I was engulfed in the tragic life of  innocent Donté Drumm, “CRASHH!!” Our car (my cab) hit the car before us. Thankfully, I was fine and so was the driver, but the car was not. Surprisingly, what worried me most was one of my airpods went flying when I had bumped my head against the front seat. After looking in almost every corner of the car, I finally found it! Meanwhile, we pulled over and both the drivers pushed open their car doors,  hard enough making their rage evident. With clenched jaws, tight fists and intense eye contact, they walked towards each other firmly. This was followed by a long and heated argument in Kannada, which  I barely understood. Our cars were parked at the side of the road, and soon there were  4 men standing in front of the car, shouting at each other. This event obviously drew the attention of many pedestrians and cars on the road,. Several people turned their heads as they walked past. Then my eyes fell on this  man, wearing a white shirt and white pants with black messy hair and chewing what seemed like gum, stood leaning against the dirty  railings. He watched the scene for a while and finally said something in Kannada which seemed like “what’s happening?” After being filled in by the details, he gave his opinion, worsened the feud, angered some men, and walked away casually, feeling a sense of satisfaction as if he had performed a ‘good deed.’

I thought about this man who seemed to have nothing better to do, poked his nose, caused more trouble than solving the dispute and then walked away with a smug face.  I wonder what prompted him to come and get involved when the matter should be none of his concern. Was it out of moral obligation that he felt, to help or was it just a time pass? I agree that getting involved in issues, even those that do not concern us, is important if we want this world to move forward but, provided we have something to contribute. However, butting in, when it does nothing but makes situations worse, is completely unnecessary.

Anyways, another cab arrived after about 30 minutes. I paused my reading and kept my airpods safely back in before it fell off again. I finally reached dance class an hour late.
