Few months back I had written on the abrogation of Article 370 of our constitution when the matter was being heard by the Supreme Court of India. The highest court in India came up with its verdict a few days back that upheld the decision to abrogate, calling it a transitory article which had served its purpose and mandating statehood to be restored in Jammu and Kashmir (other than Ladakh) by Sept 2024. The big question is … does the verdict change anything?
Over the last few days, political activists have either celebrated the verdict or have expressed their disappointment, depending on which side of the debate they belonged. Right or wrong irrespective, the verdict should bring the much needed political stability in the territories, facilitating development and economic prosperity. With the applicability of federal legislations that have long been forbidden, the mobility of labour and resources should improve. This is besides the significant improvement in law and order that has been already witnessed drawing tourists once again to enjoy its scenic beauty. As circulation of money improves, the economic cycles will trigger and coupled with Government initiatives on infrastructure and stability in law and order, we can witness the economic growth that has eluded the territories for so long.
I haven’t been to Jammu and Kashmir or Ladakh. I will be looking forward to visit and I am hopeful that the people of these territories will have a better environment to revive and thrive.
