Will countries going for elections compromise global peace and security?
2024 is being called the international year of elections. Globally, at least 64 countries plus the European Union, representing a combined population of about 49% of the people in the world, are going to hold national elections this year. This is definitely the highest in a very long time.
I am wondering whether this would increase the nationalistic focus of the governments across these countries, as their primary focus now would be to come back to power. While global policies and practices are important for the overall popularity of any government, election outcome depends on their popularity amongst their citizens. Usually incumbent fatigue also jeopardizes the chance of winning for any ruling party. Hence logically speaking every political party should ideally rely on pleasing their citizens.
Given the current global situation, with two prolonged war impacting the entire world, will this nationalistic focus of every country going to elections, further jeopardize global peace? While Ukraine and Russia keep fighting, Israel and Palestine keep fighting, how serious will the rest of the world be to mediate and resolve?
I am hopeful that inspite of the internal focus to help win elections, political parties at the helm of each of these countries will also keep Global Policies and practices in mind and continue to focus on making this world a better and peaceful place to live
